Obviously beating was Patrick Mahomes.
The Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes was voted this year's Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player, handily defeating the Philadelphia Eagles' Jalen Hurts in a preseason showdown between this weekend's opposing Super Bowl quarterbacks.
The 27-year-old Mahomes won the MVP award Thursday night for the second time in his six-year career, drawing 48 of the 50 first-place votes and collecting 490 points. Hurts and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen each collected one first-place vote, and Hurts finished in second place with a distant 193 points.
Mahomes praised his teammates, the coaching staff, and the Kansas City organisation in a pre-recorded statement.
"Giving every bit of ourselves every day to pursue the Super Bowl as our ultimate objective. Let's keep pursuing that goal this weekend."
With 5,614 total yards gained through throwing, running, and receiving (yep, the all-pro quarterback caught one pass for 6 yards), Mahomes finished a regular season that set records. His overall yardage broke Drew Brees' old record of 5,562 yards.
The Super Bowl will begin on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET. The Super Bowl this year will be historic because it will be the first Super Bowl with two starting quarterbacks of colour.
At the annual NFL awards event, Mahomes took home the trophy. Other notable winners included Geno Smith of the Seattle Seahawks as the Comeback Player of the Year and Brian Daboll of the New York Giants as the Coach of the Year.
Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year winner. The Man of the Year award goes to the player recognized for community activity off the field, as well as their season in the league.

As he and the Chiefs prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday, Mahomes was unable to attend the ceremony to accept the honour. However, the quarterback did have a message for his squad.
In a pre-recorded message, Mahomes said, "To the Chiefs organisation, Clark Hunt, Brett Veach, Andy Reid, the staff, and most importantly, my teammates, I would never be standing here today without y'all." "Giving every bit of ourselves every day to pursue the Super Bowl as our ultimate objective. Let's keep pursuing that goal this weekend."
